The goal of the Norton Police Department Ride-Along Program is to acquaint citizens with the department while providing quality service to the community. In order to accomplish this goal, the following rules are applied to this program.
♦ The minimum age for the Ride-Along Program is 16. A parent or guardian of minors under the age of 18 must sign the Release and Waiver of Liability form prior to the ride-along.
♦ All rides are scheduled for four (4) hours or less.
♦ Riders will only be scheduled Sunday through Thursday, any hours, and Friday/Saturday, hours prior to 10:00 p.m. It is our policy that a citizen may only ride four (4) times a year. A department Release and Waiver of Liability must be signed each time.
♦ Riders will remain inside the patrol vehicle at all times unless directed otherwise by the Officer and only then for safety reasons.
♦ The Ride-Along Program is offered as a privilege. The Norton Police Department reserves the right to refuse any application for ride along and a ride along may be terminated at any time at the discretion of the Officer or the Supervising Officer.
♦ “Uniforms” of any type will not be allowed (ie: military, Explorers, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, other police agencies, etc.) unless prior approval has been obtained from the Chief of Police or designee. Tape recorders and cameras will not be allowed unless previously approved by the Chief of Police or designee.
You are riding in the capacity of an observer, and you are under complete control of the Officer at all times. Every effort is made to ensure your safety; however, the Officer’s first responsibility is to carry out his assigned duties. The Officer you accompany will discuss his/her duties as time permits. If some emergency should arise, you must, without question, comply with any orders or directions given you by the Officer. The required completion of the Release and Waiver of Liability form provides notice of the rights and liabilities related to participation in our Ride-Along Program. Participants assume any and all risks associated with the Officer’s performance of official duties as a condition of accompanying any members of the Norton Police Department in the Ride-Along Program.
Thank you for your interest in the Norton Police Department!
